Ministry of Labour issues stop work orders in Elgin St. construction tragedy

The Ministry of Labour wants some safety changes made on a downtown Sudbury road construction site.

Last Wednesday, a 58-year-old woman was run over by a construction grader as she tried to cross through the construction area.

Today the Ministry of Labour issued several stop-work orders to Interpaving, the local construction company working on the site.

Ministry of Labour spokesperson Janet Deline said the ministry told the company it must install fencing between the site and pedestrian walkways. It must also bring in traffic control measures to protect workers from vehicle traffic and develop a traffic control plan to provide for pedestrian safety.

​A final order was also issued by the ministry requiring all machine operators to be provided a signaller.
The ministry and the police investigation into the incident is still ongoing.

Interpaving declined repeated requests from CBC News for comment on this story.

However the City of Greater Sudbury issued a statement late Monday, advising residents that construction will resume Tuesday morning.

According to the statement, Interpaving has told the city all the requirements have been satisfied.

Interpaving expects to start laying down asphalt on Wednesday.
