Lively's Meagan Duhamel and her skating partner Balmertown's Eric Radford took bronze in the pairs competition at the World Figure Skating Championships late last week — but the medal was a thrill for some young local skaters in Sudbury too.

Eleven-year-old Abby Obonsawin is one of them

"She's been to Worlds and she's won Canadians and it's just like I know her and I really like her and she's amazing," she said.

"I want to be there one day and to show how passionate she is about the thing I do - skating. I really want to be like her."

The Walden Figure Skating Club is Duhamel's home club.

Duhamel trains in Montreal, but often comes back to help coach and mentor the next generation of skaters - something that means a lot to coach Margaret Elliott.

"For so long it was hard for a kid from northern Ontario to make it," she said.

"Now, they know that it might be hard, it might be a tough road, it might be an expensive road, but they did it, so why can't I?"
