Hundreds of students vie for N. Ont. med school spots

The Northern Ontario School of Medicine is the only medical school in the province that saw an increase in student applications this year.

More than 1,900 people have applied for the next academic year, and are competing for 64 places in the first-year class.

The dean of the Northern Ontario School of Medicine, Roger Strasser, said the school has a growing reputation "for a high quality education."

"Our graduates are doing very well both in terms of matching for residency programs and also in their performance in the national exams," he said.

Strasser said about a dozen graduates from the school are currently practising as family doctors in the north.
