University of Saskatchewan exchange student dies in balcony fall

The University of Saskatchewan says it has confirmed the accidental death of a student in Brisbane, Australia on the weekend.

Nigel Weir had been a student at the U of S College of Kinesiology.

According to international news reports, Weir, 21, fell from a third floor balcony during a party Friday night.

"The university and the students, faculty and staff of the College of Kinesiology are deeply saddened by this news," the U of S said in a written release.

Weir was reported to be an exchange student at the University of Queensland in Brisbane. He moved there just under a year ago to study human movement.

Weir was captain of the University of Queensland Beach Volleyball Club.

"YOU WERE THE LIFE OF THE CLUB MATE!" the club's website reads.

"Thanks for all the fun in the last semester Nigel Weir," friend Christian Chris Wutte wrote on Facebook. "You were the kind of nice, funny and crazy person full of happiness that everyone knew and that everyone loved."

"It's hard to imagine that no one will shout 'NIGEEEEEL' anymore because you do some crazy stuff," Wutte added.

Weir's own Facebook page describes him as being from Waskesiu, and a contractor at Prince Albert National Park.
