Students in First Nations communities are vying for a big prize in an SGI competition about illustrating road safety.

The Save a Life Challenge aims to raise awareness of road safety issues impacting First Nations communities, including impaired driving, distracted driving, speeding and not wearing a seatbelt.

To enter, students created a video highlighting one of the safety issues. The videos are now posted to SGI's Facebook page.

One video will win the "people's choice" prize for receiving the most Likes.

A panel of SGI judges will select up to 10 videos for additional prizes. All winning videos will receive up to $10,000 in support of community or traffic safety initiatives.

According to SGI, the percentage of traffic-related injuries and fatalities related to impaired driving, speeding and not wearing a seatbelt are higher on First Nations roads compared to the rest of the province.

The winners will be announced on March 1.
