Sask. Olympic basketball star inspired by her daughter and hometown of Humboldt
Paige Crozon and her 3x3 basketball team finished 4th in Paris
Saskatchewan Olympic basketball star Paige Crozon was disappointed she didn't win a medal, but then she got a reality check.
Crozon's mother and daughter, Poppy, were in the stands when Crozon's Canada team lost in the semi-finals of the 3x3 basketball tournament to Germany. Canada eventually finished fourth after losing to the U.S.
When Crozon spoke to her mother after the Germany game, she expected to hear that Poppy was sad or disappointed. But Crozon's mom described the opposite reaction.
She said Poppy didn't mention the final score or the result. She was simply proud of her mom.
"I was like, 'Whoa, what were you watching?'" Crozon said in an interview with CBC Sports.
"But then in the past few days, reflecting upon it, what she takes away is that we went and gave our all to something that we love. We tried our best in the dedication that we've shown to get here. And I'm so proud that those are the messages and the examples that she is going to be taking away from here."
Crozon said she also learned a lot about gratitude and resilience from her hometown of Humboldt. She said one of her friends was on the Humboldt Broncos bus when it crashed.
She said she'll also be cheering for one of the former Broncos soon. Jacob Wassermann will compete in rowing at the upcoming Paralympics in Paris.
Crozon said she has learned to be grateful for the chance to play a sport she loves, no matter the result.
"I get to represent that amazing community that has provided me with so much. So I think having that perspective, and being able to zoom out, has helped with the hurt in the last few days. Because we get to play basketball. I get to do something I love and I get to share it with the people that are closest to me."
