Lawyer says she'll get better care at Ontario facility
A self-harming inmate in Saskatoon has now been moved to a non-prison psychiatric facility in Ontario.
Marlene Carter's lawyer argued that she would get better care in that facility. She has been at the Regional Psychiatric Centre in Saskatoon, where she has spent almost all of the last five years tied to a chair or bed in a segregation cell because staff can’t stop her from hurting herself.
In July, a judge sentenced her for assaulting guards and staff, but she was not declared a dangerous offender. The consequence is that Carter will spend two more years in custody.
The crown is appealing the judge's decision.
Carter has spent much of her life in prison and has a history of drug and alcohol abuse.
