Child porn allegations at Saskatoon trial expose dark side of Facebook
Abdul Rehman Jat alleged to have created fake profiles under guise of teenage girl
A Saskatoon man is on trial accused of using a fake Facebook account to extort nude photos from a 17-year-old girl.
Abdul Rehman Jat is charged with extortion, child luring, and possessing and distributing child pornography. The trial is underway at Court of Queen's Bench.
The allegations date back to July 2016.
Prosecutor Evan Thompson said Jat is alleged to have posed as a teenage girl using a series of fake Facebook profiles, befriended a 17-year-old girl and got her to send him nude photographs.
He allegedly used those photos "to then extort her to send further photos and do further sexual acts," Thompson said.
The statement said the 17-year-old girl was contacted by a Facebook account created under a girl's name she recognized on or about July 3, 2016. The account claimed to be the "boss" and said that the teen had to listen and follow instructions, the agreed statement said.
The Facebook account instructed the teen to send nude photos, which she did. It then instructed the teen to send pictures of herself having sex "with a guy I don't like." The fake identity threatened to send the previously sent nude pictures to the girl's friends and family if the demands weren't met, the statement said.
At about the same time, someone created a fake Facebook account in the teen's name, added some of her real friends, and then posted the nude photos. This led to police being contacted.
The trial is continuing Thursday.
