High school bus service has been cancelled for Greater Saskatoon Catholic Schools and Saskatoon Public Schools on Monday due to extreme cold weather.

All school buses serving Saskatoon Public Schools are cancelled for the entire day, a release from the division said.

Only high school buses are cancelled for the Catholic school division because Monday is a professional learning development day for elementary school staff, so there are no classes for elementary school students, a release from the division said.

Both school divisions have a policy to cancel bus service when the temperature feels like -45 C with the wind chill.

Environment Canada has issued an extreme cold warning for Saskatoon, saying temperatures in the minus thirties with wind will produce windchills of minus 40 or colder.

In these temperatures, frostbite can develop in minutes if skin is left exposed, Environment Canada said.

Schools will remain open for regular school hours, though.
