Workplace death shuts down Nutrien potash mine near Rocanville, Sask.

A workplace death has temporarily closed a potash mine near Rocanville, Sask., according to the company that owns and operates the facility. 

Nutrien has confirmed that an employee died at the railcar loading facility at its mine near Rocanville, Sask., on Sunday.

The mine, which is located approximately 250 kilometres east of Regina, has temporarily halted operations, Nutrien said in a statement. 

The company says they are conducting their own internal investigation as well as cooperating with Saskatchewan's Ministry of Labour Relations and Workplace Safety. 

"Our thoughts go out to the family and friends as well as our own employees who will also be impacted during this very difficult time. Our current focus is on ensuring we have support services available to all those involved," the statement read. 

The company says it is unlikely to issue further comment until the internal and external reviews are completed. 

A request for comment with the Ministry of Labour Relations and Workplace Safety was not immediately returned.
