Sask. leads Canada in over-100 rate
Want to live to be 100?
Living in Saskatchewan would appear to improve your odds, according to the latest census data.
According to a Statistics Canada report from the federal census released Tuesday, Saskatchewan had 31 centenarians per 100,000 people in 2011, the highest rate of any province or territory.
The rate was almost twice that of the national average (17.4 per 100,000) and topped the over-100 rate of a number of countries known for their longevity, including Italy.
Newfoundland and Labrador, the province with the lowest rate, had 10.7 centenarians per 100,000 people.
The StatsCan report notes that the high rate of centenarians in Saskatchewan — about 320 in 2011 — is related to the fact that for many years during the 20th century, Saskatchewan had the highest life expectancy of all provinces and territories.
