Shallow lake near Unity, Sask. a perfect bird paradise
Bald eagles, hawks, owls, ducks and more
Amanda Ubell has had hundreds of flighty, beautiful characters for neighbours over the years.
The professional photographer has met bald eagles, snowy owls, great horned owls, falcons, hawks, blue herons, pelicans, swans, ducks and many other birds near her Unity, Sask. farm.
"I shot all of these photos within [an 8 kilometre] radius of our farm," Ubell said. "I am sure that we live on a migratory bird path."
Ubell said she has been taking her camera out to meet the birds for the past three years.
"The bald eagles — they are back every year and we have a few breeding pairs that nest close by. And then this year I have seen so many owls," wrote Ubell in a photo submission to CBC Saskatchewan.
Ubell said that nearby Killsquaw Lake is a gathering spot for the creatures each year. She said the body of water is shallow and therefore has very little boat traffic, making it the ideal peaceful place for birds.
"I think I've been doing it in this area that birds are getting used to me. I notice certain birds coming back year after year," Ubell said.
Ubell said she uses a very quick shutter speed and a higher ISO to capture the quick animals in action.
