Football star Anthony Calvillo is in Regina to take part in a hospital fundraiser where Saskatchewan's Carter Brown, 8, is a featured speaker. Carter is an official ambassador for the Shriners Hospital for Children in Montreal.

The youngster has been to the hospital for treatment of a condition commonly known as brittle bone disease.

"I was born with osteogenesis imperfecta, also known as brittle bone disease," Carter said. "We didn't know that until I was three weeks old and I've been going out to hospital ever since I was a little baby."

His spirit and courage has impressed many, including Calvillo who was a star for the Montreal Alouettes.

"I met Carter last year at the Shriners Hospital golf tournament and I was just blown away," Calvillo told CBC Radio host Craig Lederhouse Friday just prior to the Regina fundraising event. "His attitude, his character and his speech — he was the keynote speaker at the dinner."

Carter has dedicated a lot of time to supporting the hospital.

"I've done a lemonade stand, I sell cookies and just sharing my story with my friends," Carter said.

Calvillo, who retired from the CFL as professional football's all-time passing leader, said he has formed a special bond with Carter.

"You can just see a certain spirit in this young man," Calvillo said.

"There's always things that are going to happen in peoples' lives," he added. "Adversity is going to hit and I think if you have the proper attitude, you're able to get through it. And to see this young man is inspiring and he has that kind of effect on people."

Calvillo made a promise that if Carter had a big fundraising event, he would be there.

The Regina dinner was sold out.
