5 things to do in Saskatchewan this weekend if you're not a jazz fan

Jazz Festival isn't the only big thing happening in the province.

From sports to science to bacon there is lots going on in the province

It's going to be a hot, dry weekend across the province. And besides the obvious Jazz Festival in Saskatoon, there's science, sports and even bacon for you to get involved with.

Here are a few highlights: 

1. World Men's Softball (June 26 to July 5)

Saskatoon - Bob Van Impe Stadium and Gordie Howe Park

The best softball teams in the world will meet up in Saskatoon for the World Men's Softball Championship. Teams from as far and New Zealand, Argentina and Great Britain will be battling for softball supremacy. There are games all weekend with the gold medal game taking place July 5. Tickets range from free for children 16 and under to $25.00 for adults. 

2. Just for Cats Internet Film Festival (June 27 and June 28)

The Regina Humane Society is hosting a cat film festival. (Just for Cats)
The popular festival was in Saskatoon last week and now comes down to Regina. The Regina Humane Society is putting on the show, filled with the best internet car videos. Tickets are $15 for adults and $5 for kids. Proceeds will go to the humane society.

3. Great Saskatchewan Bacon Festival (June 27)

Kipling - Kipling Community Centre

"Don't miss snout," the event invitation reads. Bacon lovers in the province will gather in the small community about 150 kilometres east of Regina to celebrate the popular breakfast food. Bacon infused dishes will be available to sample between 12:00 p.m. CST and 4:00. A tailgate party begins at 5:30 with the Rider game playing on the big screen. 

4. Saskatchewan Roughriders vs. Winnipeg Blue Bombers (June 27)

Speaking of the beloved green and white, the team's home opener takes place on Saturday evening. Tickets are nearly sold out as of Friday. It will be an early preview of this classic rivalry. The teams meet every year at Labour Day and the week after for the Banjo Bowl. Darian Durant will start his first regular season game since injuring his elbow last year.

5. Canadian Light Source Open House (June 27)

Saskatoon - 44 Innovation Boulevard

Finally, if science is your thing, you should head up to Saskatoon to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Canadian Light Source.  You can speak with the scientists who work there about their research and get an up close look at the synchrotron. Both guided and self-guided tours are available, and there are numerous kids activities, including a snow cone making bike, water bottle rockets and dry ice experiments. You can even make your own roller coaster. The event is from 1:00 to 5:00 and free to attend.
