3 sentenced for home-invasion killing

Jacob Worm will have to wait 14 years before being eligible for parole for the murder of a Regina man in 2006, while two accomplices will also serve prison terms, a Regina judge decided Friday. 

Worm, 25, was found guilty of second-degree murder earlier this year in the death of Douglas Anderson on Nov. 18, 2006.  

Anderson died from a gunshot wound to the abdomen during an early-morning home invasion at his house in the 1200 block of McTavish Street. 

With a murder conviction, the sentence is automatically life in prison with a minimum waiting period of 10 years before parole is possible.

The Crown asked for 18 years before parole eligibility, but Queen's Bench Justice Catherine Dawson, who gave reasons for her decision, set the waiting period at 16 years. Because Worm has already been in custody for two years, he won't be eligible for parole until 2023.

On the night of the murder, court heard, Worm and two accomplices spent the night drinking alcohol and partying. Walking along the street, they came to Anderson's address. They kicked in a door and rushed into the house looking for drugs and money, proclaiming that they were members of a notorious street gang.

Dawson described it as a "senseless and callous" attack where innocent people were left beaten and shot.

While she spoke, Worm sat in the prisoner's box, most of the time with his head lying on his folded arms. He had no visible reaction to his sentence.

Crown prosecutor James Fitz-Gerald said the Anderson family is still dealing with the tragedy — especially Anderson's 14-year-old granddaughter.

"She was sleeping on the couch in the living room when she was awoken by a loud bang, which is the back door being kicked in," Fitz-Gerald said outside the courthouse.

"She was in the living room when a number of individuals attacked her grandfather, Mr. Anderson. And she was cowering in the living room when she heard the gunshot. So she was present for the whole horrific circumstances."

Two other men who participated in the deadly home invasion who had been convicted of manslaughter were also sentenced Friday.

Denny Jimmy and Tyrone Worm received 12 years in prison, but because of time served, there will be eight years left in their sentences
