A 'thick' glass ceiling: P.E.I. Status of Women chair disappointed in Trump win
Mari Basiletti hopeful other strong female politicians will run in future
While she thought she was going to be celebrating history with the election of the first woman president of the United States, Mari Basiletti says she instead woke Nov. 9 to learn Donald Trump had been elected.
The chair of the P.E.I. Advisory Council on the Status of Women said she was shocked and saddened to wake up
in a hotel room in Maine to hear of Trump's win yesterday.
"Here was a moment where a woman who's been working for the government of the U.S. for a long time, a stateswoman for sure, very intelligent, is running for president, and quite qualified, against a person who many considered, I among them, to be racist, sexist, a misogynist, anti-other religions, anti-feminist for sure," she said.
"But the American people have spoken."

Hoping for 'lovely historic moment;
An American citizen herself, Basiletti said she was travelling back to P.E.I., her home since 1972 from visiting her son in Brewster, New York on election day.
"So we were all prepared to celebrate Hillary's win because that looked like where it was going. I thought this was a lovely historic moment. The first woman president of the U.S."
Basiletti said she hopes this does not deter other women considering a future run adding there are a really strong women in U.S. politics, like Nancy Pelosi.
"Women are rising, it's just that glass ceiling, it seems to be very, very thick here."
