RCMP in P.E.I.'s Queens County will begin moving into some new digs in Cornwall over the coming days.

In a social media post, the force said its offices on Maypoint Road in Charlottetown will be closed to the public as of Monday.

That will allow staff to begin the process of relocating to a new detachment on Mercedes Drive, about a five-minute drive down the road in Cornwall. It will be next to the town hall.

RCMP say the move is expected to take several days. In the meantime, the public can visit the Stratford RCMP detachment on Georgetown Road for any service requirements within Queens County.

The new 23,626-square-foot building in Cornwall will serve as an operations base for the Queens County RCMP after more than 20 years on Maypoint Road.

It will include space to store seized vehicles as well as police boats, ATVs and snow machines, and will also serve as the base for police dog and forensic identification services.

The detachment will also include five cells for holding people who are under arrest.

Construction delays

The detachment has been under construction since 2023, and was originally scheduled to open more than a year ago.

It was initially estimated to cost the RCMP $18.5 million to build, which included more than $700,000 to purchase the land from the town.

The RCMP has not said how the delayed opening has affected the overall construction cost.

The force said an official opening of the new detachment will be held at a future date.
