One dead in residential fire in eastern P.E.I. Thursday morning
RCMP says fire is not believed to be suspicious at this time
One person has been found dead after a residential fire Thursday morning in eastern Prince Edward Island, police say.
The fire in Farmington was reported around 8:30 a.m. The St. Peters Fire Department and Kings District RCMP responded and found the home engulfed.
Human remains were found inside the building after the fire was extinguished, RCMP said in a news release.
In an earlier release, police initially identified the victim as male, but later said they could not give information about the person's identity until the details can be confirmed.
"At this stage, initial indications appear to show that it is not a suspicious fire, but the investigation is still ongoing," said Cpl. Gavin Moore, the P.E.I. RCMP's media relations officer.
The province's fire marshal, the provincial coroner and Kings District RCMP are all involved in the investigation.
"Our thoughts are with the family of the owner of this residence as they deal with this difficult news," Moore said.
"We have the utmost empathy for anybody who has to suffer with learning of these types of information."
