Alberton's next mayor is a familiar face in the town.

Hector MacLeod was the only person to come forward to seek the position, so he was acclaimed earlier this week. He will be sworn into the position by the end of the month.

MacLeod is a former mayor of the western P.E.I. town, having served in that capacity from 1979 to 1988 and from 1991 to 1993.

He is also a former provincial MLA, elected for the Liberals in Alberton-Miminegash in 1996 but defeated in the 2000 election.

Alberton's former mayor, Brian Poirier, resigned from office in December after just over a year in office, saying only that he felt he "had lost confidence of three councillors."

According to the town's website, Alberton's councillors are Alan Curtis, Krista Murphy, Jean O'Brien, Maureen Chaisson, Cameron Boyce and Holly Gordon.

Curtis, who has been Alberton's deputy mayor, had stepped into the mayor's role until an election could be held.

Alberton is the largest community in West Prince, home to about 1,400 people.
