Harness racers set to trot in Charlottetown

Canada's best harness racing drivers are competing in Charlottetown this Saturday night.

This year's National Driving Championship is being held at Red Shores Racetrack and Casino. 

Drivers from across the country compete in the one-day event to determine Canada's representative at the World Driving Championship to be held from July 31 to Aug. 5 at tracks in Pennsylvania, New York and New Jersey.

P.E.I.'s Kenny Arsenault, one of eight drivers competing, said winning would be "a dream come true."

"You know, it's quite a thing. I mean, if I ever did win it, it's like going to the Olympics. I'm representing Canada." he said.

Arsenault, 50, is considered one of the front-runners, because he's driven a lot of the horses that will be in the race.

Also highly ranked are New Brunswick's Gilles Barrieau and Ontario's Jody Jamieson. Jamieson is one of the top three harness racers in Canada, and the 2001 World Champion.  

The races get underway at 6:45 p.m.
