Foster parent recruitment stepped up on P.E.I.

The P.E.I. government is looking for more families to act as foster parents, to ensure the best possible match for children in need.

There are currently between 160 and 170 children in care across the province, with about 85 foster homes.

Maureen MacEwen, provincial co-ordinator for child protection services, said all the foster homes on P.E.I. provide excellent care, but more foster parents are needed to ensure the best possible matches for the individual needs of the children.

"Ideally we'd like to be able to make the best placement match for children," said MacEwen.

"Having options of homes to choose from helps us do that."

MacEwen also said new foster parents are needed to replace those who are considering retiring.

The province has launched a new web site to provide detailed information to people interested in becoming foster parents. It outlines the requirements, responsibilities, and provides contact information.

Provincial officials are hoping this quick access to information will result in more people wanting to open their homes to foster children.
