Charlottetown's annual polar dip is set to take place at 10 a.m. New Year's Day at the Charlottetown Harbour.

Organizer Jason Mosher says the chilly dip has become a tradition for many.

Every year hundreds of people run in and out of the water — some super fast, and some with a bit slower bravado.

Mosher shared some tips on how to do a polar dip the right way.

"So basically go in with as little clothing as you can, I usually wear a tank top and shorts an old pair of sneakers because when I'm running in you can cut your feet on the ice or on the rocks and the shore," said Mosher.

"And have a team on site that can help you as soon as you get out. The quicker you can get in and out of that water the better you are."

The weather is expected to cooperate, with temperatures forecast around –4 C.

The event is a fundraiser for the local food bank. Mosher says money and food donations are welcome.

The dip is at the bottom of Water Street between the courthouse and yacht club.
