P.E.I. investigating proportional representation

Prince Edward Island's chief electoral officer says he hopes to have some options on proportional representation ready by later this year.

A few weeks ago, a legislative committee on the elections act tabled a report in the House. It suggested the province look at alternatives.

The idea is to stop lopsided results, which happened in three of the last four provincial elections.

In the last election held in April 2000, Pat Binns's Conservatives took 58 per cent of the vote. With that, they won 26 of the 27 seats in the legislative assembly. The Liberals took 34 per cent of the vote, but ended up with just one seat. The NDP, with eight per cent, was shut out.

Chief electoral officer Merrill Wigginton says the committee wants him to look into as many models as possible and come up with several suggestions.
