Teen cyclist dies after being hit by car near Long Sault, Ont.
Charlotte Light, 14, pronounced dead at Friday afternoon scene
A 14-year-old cyclist is dead after being hit by a car near Cornwall, Ont., on Friday afternoon.
According to Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), the girl was struck while riding east on the westbound shoulder of County Road 2 west of Long Sault, just outside Cornwall.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene shortly before 3:30 p.m. and found off-duty firefighters and others attempting life-saving measures on the girl, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.
"[They] made every effort to revive her and keep her alive," OPP spokesperson Bill Dickson told CBC News.
'Absolutely cherished'
CBC News has independently verified the identity of the victim as Charlotte Light.
The OPP said her next-of-kin were notified soon after the crash.
A crowdfunding page launched over the weekend said Light was an older sister to five siblings and was poised to begin high school in Cornwall later this week.
Light played soccer, was a budding actress and stood as a loyal and outgoing friend to her primary school classmates in Ingleside, just west of Long Sault, according to the post.
"Charlotte was absolutely cherished and loved by her entire family," the post said.
Driver uninjured
The driver of the car was not injured. They stayed at the scene and are cooperating with police, Dickson said.
"This is a terrible tragedy for a family and a community to go through," he added.
OPP is asking anyone who witnessed the collision or who may have information to contact investigators, according to a Sunday morning post on social media.
