The Rideau Canal Skateway will be closed to skaters from 8 a.m. Monday until conditions allow it to be reopened.

The pause is to preserve the ice surface through a few days of warmer weather, the National Capital Commission said in a Sunday afternoon news release.

Visitors are still permitted to run or walk on the skateway's new designated walking lane, the NCC said, adding that washrooms, change rooms and food and beverage concessions will remain open.

Daily high temperatures in Ottawa are expected to hover above freezing for the next few days, with a chance of rain Monday and Tuesday, according to Environment Canada.

Once it reopens, the NCC's Bruce Devine said Friday he expects the skateway to remain open for several more weeks.
