Police have charged an 83-year-old man with second-degree murder in connection with a death in Rockland on Friday, according to Ontario Provincial Police (OPP).

The victim died just before 3 p.m. on Friday near Lalonde Street, police said.

In a news release Sunday morning, OPP deemed the death a homicide and identified both the suspect, 83-year-old Gilles Martel, and the charge he was facing.

OPP identified the victim Monday as 29-year-old Dharmeshkumar Vallabhabhai Kathireeya from the broader city of Clarence-Rockland.

Area residents can expect a continued police presence nearby, police told Radio-Canada, but investigators said there is no ongoing risk to public safety.

The scene is roughly 40 kilometres east of downtown Ottawa.
