Kingston, Ont., police say Sgt. Jason Alblas has been charged with one count of sexual assault, alleging it happened while he was off duty this past August.

In a news release, Kingston Police said they first heard of an incident in October, suspended Alblas and brought in Durham Regional Police to investigate.

Alblas was charged on Thursday, Kingston Police said. They said he was released from custody after his most recent court appearance and is suspended without pay.

The news release did not say where police were told the assault happened, nor why it was Durham Regional Police that investigated. CBC has asked for clarification.

Alblas was listed as vice-president of the Kingston Police Association as recently as Sunday, according to an archived snapshot of the association's website. The role is now listed as vacant.

CBC has also reached out to the association for comment.
