Canada Votes 2025: Nepean

The process of keeping federal ridings fair meant shrinking Nepean from its former boundaries to account for nearly 30,000 people moving there over a decade.

Ottawa's Nepean riding no longer extends west of Highway 416. (Elections Canada)

The rough draft of this story used to start with a line about Nepean shrinking because nearly 30,000 people moved there over a decade — then the Liberals cut Chandra Arya as a candidate days before the campaign.

In his place, Liberal Party leader Mark Carney will now run in the riding.

Its hub remains Barrhaven through the independent review that followed the 2021 census.

However, its western border is now Highway 416, giving ground to Carleton (the Fallowfield and Moodie area, for example) and Kanata (which takes Bells Corners).

Its southern limit is now Barnsdale Road, switching more people south of there to Carleton.

Nepean's north end is now the train tracks north of West Hunt Club Road, which brings in people along Prince of Wales Drive from Ottawa West-Nepean.

This is another riding that had significant changes in the previous redistribution before the 2015 election. Arya won the three elections since then. He got about 45 per cent of the vote last time.
