Rideau Street closure complicates downtown bus routes

The closure of a short — but critical — stretch of Rideau Street is causing a range of detours and changes that vary depending on your route.

The closure of a short — but critical — stretch of Rideau Street is causing a range of detours and changes that vary depending on your route.

Construction delays caused by the massive sinkhole on Rideau Street in June prompted the city to close the busy stretch of the road between Sussex Drive and Dalhousie Street to all vehicular traffic — from 8 p.m. Wednesday and until the end of December.

Are you used to taking an OC Transpo bus on Rideau Street? The closure between Sussex Drive and Dalhousie Street is causing a range of detours depending on your route. (City of Ottawa)

Here's the breakdown for OC Transpo buses:

  • Routes 1 and 7 will operate via Daly Avenue and will stop at the intersections of Rideau and Dalhousie streets, and Daly and Nicholas Street.
  • Routes 2 and 4 will operate along Albert and Slater streets, ending at the corner of Elgin and Sparks streets.
  • Route 9 will start at Rideau and Sussex and end at Rideau and Dalhousie.
  • Routes 12 and 18 will stop at Rideau and Dalhousie and will end at Daly and Nicholas. That intersection will become the starting point for eastbound trips.
  • Route 14 will run on the Mackenzie King Bridge, as well as special Routes 403 and 450.

STO changes

Meanwhile, two temporary STO bus stops with service to Gatineau have been created to deal with the Rideau Street detour: on MacKenzie Avenue in front of the Connaught building and on Sussex Drive near York Street.

Route 21 will stop at Rideau and Cumberland streets, then continue on Waller Street, the Mackenzie King Bridge, Elgin Street, Wellington Street and along its usual route.

Routes 20, 48, 55, 59, 67, 87, 200 and 400 will be served from the bus stop on Wellington and Metcalfe streets.

The Rideau Street closure is causing detours for STO buses until the end of December. (STO)
