A Halifax resident says the city should fire the Citadel Hill cannon and ring church bells each Dec. 6 to mark the 1917 Halifax Explosion.

Fred Honsburger says it would create a greater recognition of the disaster.

"The cannon is to recognize the incident and the bells to celebrate the lives," he says. "I think there would be a conversation about what it would have been like."

Currently, a ceremony is held at the Fort Needham memorial, where people gather and bells are rung.

Jennifer Watts, the area councillor, says any extra resources should go into expanding that event.

"People may not really understand the context for the ringing of the bells if they do hear them because it would happen shortly after 9, when people would be at work or school," she said.
