Reaction to foiled Halifax mass shooting plot
Suspects planned on 'opening fire to kill citizens, and then themselves,' on Valentine's Day
When Nova Scotia police announced on Friday that they had stopped a plot to kill a large number of people in Halifax, reaction was swift.
Here is some of that reaction:
Mayor Mike Savage
"I got word last night that something was happening from the police department and that they'd keep me apprised and then, this morning I got a briefing as to what they knew and what they had. I happened to have already had a scheduled meeting at the police station to meet with the chief and some of the folks so I got briefed this morning and then again this afternoon by the chief and RCMP."
"They told me basically what they made public which is that we had this situation which developed, that obviously is of concern when something like this happens. That the person had killed themselves. That there was some kind of wider plan to cause harm, and obviously the good news is that they discovered all this and dealt with this very effectively."
"It just shows to me that we always have to be vigilant. That the kind of things that are happening require good, strong police presence and police work, investigative work as well as the reaction of the officers and I think we were well served by our police force today."
Minister of Public Safety Steven Blaney
"I applaud the excellent work by officers of the RCMP, CBSA, HalifaxRegional Police and Geneva Police Department for their diligence and collaboration. These arrests are a great example of the fine work they do on a daily basis to help keep Canadians safe. We support our law enforcement agencies who work tirelessly to ensure our communities are safe places to live, work and raise families."
Nova Scotia Premier Stephen McNeil
"On behalf of all Nova Scotians, I thank our police officials, here and in the United States, for their quick and professional work. We are grateful for their dedication and vigilance."
