Port Hawkesbury fire sends mother and son to hospital

A nine-year-old boy had to be airlifted to hospital after a Friday night fire in Port Hawkesbury, Cape Breton.

Police say the boy was airlifted to hospital in Halifax in critical condition

A fire has left a nine-year-old boy from Port Hawkesbury, Cape Breton in critical condition, after he had to be airlifted to hospital Friday night.

The blaze broke out in the kitchen of a home on Bourinot Drive at around 9:30.

Curtis Doucet, the chief of the Port Hawkesbury Volunteer Fire Department, says a boy and his mother were in the home at the time the fire started and both had to be taken to hospital.

Police say the boy was airlifted to hospital in Halifax in critical condition. There is no word on how he is doing today.

Doucet says the kitchen and some of the upstairs was damaged, but the home is still standing.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
