Ottawa, Nova Scotia tee up Games funding
The federal and Nova Scotia governments have agreed to spend more than $22 million to help Halifax host the next Canada Winter Games.
The two levels of government announced Friday they would contribute $11.12 million each for capital and operating costs for the two-week sporting event, to take place in 2011.
Barry Barnet, the province's minister responsible for sport, called it a "fair and generous" funding agreement that will help turn Nova Scotia into one of the healthiest provinces.
"It will also leave behind a legacy that will benefit Nova Scotians for many years to come after the Games are over," he said.
The Halifax Regional Municipality said it would spend up to $8.55 million of its own money.
Halifax was awarded the Games in February 2007, beating Truro and Antigonish.
A host community has to be able to accommodate 3,600 athletes and coaches, as well as 1,000 technical officials and media personnel.
Halifax hosted the Canada Summer Games in 1969, while Sydney had the Winter Games in 1987.
