Some schools are closed or dismissing early on Thursday across the mainland of Nova Scotia as a messy mix of winter weather heads toward the region.

CBC meteorologist Tina Simpkin says the strong area of low pressure will track through the Maritimes and intensify.

The snow is expected to begin this morning before changing to ice pellets and freezing rain early this afternoon, prompting freezing rain warnings for western and central parts of the province.

A number of schools are impacted by the weather:

  • Halifax Regional Centre for Education schools will be dismissing two hours early.
  • Tri-County Regional Centre for Education schools are closed.
  • South Shore Regional Centre for Education schools will dismiss three hours early.
  • Annapolis Valley Regional Centre for Education schools are closed.
  • All Chignecto Central Regional Centre for Education schools in Colchester, Cumberland and Pictou counties and in the Municipality of East Hants will dismiss two hours early.

Simpkin says there could be more than four hours of freezing rain that will transition to rain this evening.

Between five and 10 centimetres of snow is expected to fall on Thursday, with two to five millimetres of rain and freezing rain in the forecast.
