MV Miner wreck removal from Scaterie Island almost done
Work is expected to finish next month
New pictures released on Thursday by the Nova Scotia government show just how much work has been done to remove the wreck of the MV Miner from Scaterie Island.
The work is on track to be completed in February, said Transportation Minister Geoff MacLellan.
He confirmed the total bill for the cleanup will be more than the $12 million budgeted, but wasn't able to give a final figure.
The MV Miner broke its line and ran aground on Scatarie Island in September 2011 while being towed from Montreal to Turkey, where it was to be scrapped.
The removal of the MV Miner was expected to be completed by November 2014, but work was delayed when 30 tonnes of asbestos were found. Originally, it was estimated that there would only be 6.6 tonnes of asbestos present.
