MV Farley Mowat owner risks jail by ignoring court order to move ship
Derelict ship has been deteriorating at the Shelburne wharf since September 2013
The owner of the derelict MV Farley Mowat has until midnight to remove the ship from the Port of Shelburne.
Tracy Dodds, a Wolfville scrap dealer, has already missed three court-ordered deadlines to remove the vessel.
An official at the Port of Shelburne told CBC News the ship is still there. If MV Farley Mowat is still there after midnight, a security officer will snap a picture of it and send it to the CAO of Shelburne and to the port's lawyer.
Dodds could pay $10,000 in penalties and spend 20 days in jail for not moving the vessel. Half of that money would go to the Town of Shelburne and the other half would be an additional fine.
Last chance
MV Farley Mowat has been deteriorating at wharfside in Shelburne since September 2014. It sank at the wharf in 2015 and the Canadian Coast Guard hired contractors to raise the vessel.
Earlier in May, a Federal Court of Canada found the scrap dealer in contempt of court. Should the ship be removed before midnight, Dodds could apply to the court to have the contempt order removed.
The derelict ship has been causing problems for the Town of Shelburne as it has had to turn away fishing boats that were willing to pay to occupy the space.
