The Child Remains was the name of the film by Nova Scotia filmmaker Michael Melski.  The project was set to begin its 19-day shoot on May 25 with a crew of 40 people, plus 10 actors, 50 extras, vendors and caterers.

It's unclear exactly what led to the cancellation of this local production but Gary Vermeir, an agent for the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees Local 849, says changes introduced to the Nova Scotia film tax credit in the provincial budget did not help.

Melski admits the tax credit issue contributed to the decision, but it wasn't the only reason.  He says production instability played a role, but would not elaborate.

Meanwhile, a made-for-TV movie starring Tom Selleck is currently shooting in Halifax.

Screen Nova Scotia is asking producers to report in on the status of productions planned for this season, as the industry waits for guidelines on how to apply for the new tax credit.

At least one other production, a Jim Henson TV special, has indicated it will not be coming to the province.
