Manslaughter charge laid in death of Halifax pedestrian in January
Deepak Sharma, 32, to appear in Halifax provincial court on April 4 for election and plea
A 32-year-old man has been charged with manslaughter in the January death of a woman who was struck by a vehicle at a Halifax intersection.
The Nova Scotia Public Prosecution Service confirmed the new charge against Deepak Sharma on Thursday.
Sharma is on house arrest staying at an address in Moncton, N.B., with people who share his surname.
He is scheduled to appear in Halifax provincial court on April 4 to enter a plea and elect a court for trial.
Sharma was previously charged with operating a conveyance causing death, operating a conveyance while impaired causing death, leaving the scene of an accident and leaving the scene of an accident causing death, according to a Halifax Regional Police news release in January.
Police said they were called to the scene near the corner of Jubilee Road and Robie Street around 5:47 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 27.
At the time, police said a man's vehicle had crashed into another vehicle on Jubilee Road. He then allegedly tried to flee and hit 21-year-old Alexandria Wortman in a crosswalk before striking two parked vehicles.
She was taken to hospital where she later died.
Under the terms of his house arrest, Sharma is not allowed to consume or possess alcohol or controlled substances unless prescribed by a doctor. He has to remain at the home in Moncton and is only allowed to leave for medical emergencies involving himself or a member of the household. He is also not allowed to operate a motor vehicle.
