HMCS Fredericton will return to Halifax following its training at sea to undergo repairs, according to Maritime Forces Atlantic.

During a routine inspection, a military spokesperson says "tiny fissures" were found in a long, thin piece of metal around the funnel of the ship, located on the weather deck.

It's planned the ship will sail to the Mediterranean to replace HMCS Winnipeg, which is participating in maritime security operations.

The spokesperson said HMCS Fredericton will continue to sail and finish its training.
