A new road in Bridgewater is going to be named after Cpl. Nathan Cirillo, the reservist who was gunned down and killed in Ottawa last month while guarding the tomb of the unknown soldier.

The street is barricaded to traffic and is found in Bridgewater’s business park. It will be called Nathan Cirillo Road.

Councillor Martin Bell is the one who spearheaded the initiative to name a street after Cpl. Nathan Cirillo. (CBC)

The decision to name a road after Cirillo was an easy one for District of Lunenburg councillors — they voted for it unanimously.

"I look at Mr. Cirillo as an individual like Terry Fox — he was a Canadian that we could all associate with. We didn't have to be there to still feel what has taken place,” said Coun. Martin Bell, who came up with the idea.

He says the fact Cirillo is not from Nova Scotia shouldn’t matter.

People who work near the street were supportive of the move.

"It's a nice gesture and I think all Canadians and wherever you're from, I think would be proud to have something named after him," said Stephen Veinot.

The street won't officially be called Nathan Cirillo Road until Monday evening when council gives its final reading of the measure.
