Centennial Pool reopening delayed until January

Some surprise repairs have delayed the reopening of the Centennial Pool in downtown Halifax.

The 45-year old facility closed in August so the changing rooms and the front desk could be renovated. It was supposed to be ready this month.

But after the work began, contractors discovered wooden support columns in poor condition. The extra repairs added $90,000 to the almost $800,000 project.

That's on top of the first two rounds of renovations which cost about $4 million.The pool recently had mechanical and electrical upgrades, and solar panels installed.

City officials said they now expect the pool to reopen in late January.

Centennial is one of two 50 metre pools in the city, and the only pool in the Maritimes with a 10 metre platform for diving.

The pool first opened in 1967. The city said the renovations should keep it open another 20 years.
