Boy, 17, charged in triple-fatal Port Hood crash

A 17-year-old boy faces a list of dangerous driving charges stemming from a triple fatal car crash this summer that rocked the rural Cape Breton communities of Judique and Port Hood. 

Logan Patrick MacIntyre, 17, Morgan Christopher MacIntyre, 19 — both from Judique — and 20-year-old Joel Cecil Chandler, from Port Hood, died when the car they were travelling in went off the road and flipped over on July 22.

There were seven people packed into the car. All but the driver were thrown from the car.

Const. Brad Anderson said although four people survived, they were far from unscathed.

"One of the survivors is paraplegic now as a result of injuries received. I understand that one received a head injury that may have lasting effects on his [cognitive] abilities. And I understand from speaking with one of the doctors shortly after the collision the third survivor may well suffer chronic pain for the rest of their life as a result of injuries received," he said.

"Even for the survivors, those few seconds that night will have, it appears, lifelong effects on all three of them."

Police said the Harbourview teen has been charged with three counts of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death and three counts of dangerous driving causing bodily harm.

"They're almost as serious as they can get. There were the three people who died directly as a result of the collision that night and the charges would indicate that we feel the driver is the person responsible for that," said Anderson.

The teen will appear in a Port Hood youth court in February.
