Africville Park becomes on-leash for dogs as new park opens
Halifax Mainland Common park will grow to cover three acres of off-leash areas
Africville Park in Halifax has become a leashed park for dogs as a new off-leash dog park opens in Clayton Park.
Halifax staff recommended ending the park’s run as an off-leash area after concerns were raised by the Africville Genealogy Society, visitors to the replica Africville church and others.
The replacement off-leash park opened this week in the Halifax Mainland Common, near Westridge Drive.
Halifax spokeswoman Jennifer Stairs says that means, as of Jan. 1, the Africville Park is no longer an off-leash area.
"Signage throughout the park indicates that dogs are still permitted, as long as they are on a leash and accompanied by their owner. Those in violation may be ticketed," she said.
The Mainland Common park will grow in the spring as the city develops the wooded area with trails, shelter, water and better fencing.
It will take in three acres of fenced-in green and wooded space that will be off-leash for dogs.
The park is adjacent to the popular Mainland North Linear Trail, which continues to be an on-leash area.
