Yukon NDP wants Whitehorse candidates to disclose funding
No requirements for municipal candidates to disclose where they get their money
Yukon NDP leader Liz Hanson is calling on Whitehorse municipal candidates to disclose where they get their money.
Unlike territorial elections, there are no requirements for candidates to tell citizens who paid for their election campaign.
Hanson would like to see those who are running for city council publish a list of financial and in-kind contributions.
"I'm just putting it out there that if somebody wants my vote, I'd like to know who is behind them and are they willing to disclose who is making donations in-kind to their election campaign because I think it is quite legitimate. I have run in elections and I have certainly solicited and I am happy to take donations to my campaign, but I also publish according to the Yukon's Elections Act," she said.
Hanson suggests the Municipal Act adopt the Yukon elections guidelines, which requires donations over $250 to be disclosed.
Municipal elections get underway Oct. 18 across the territory.
