Yukon fireworks sales indicate the sky will be bright tonight

Between the city fireworks display and private launchings outside of Whitehorse boundaries, there will be no shortage of fireworks lighting up the sky tonight.

Tonight is a good time to keep the pets inside because if the sky is clear, the "shrills" and "bangs" of fireworks displays will be lighting up the sky in and around Whitehorse.

Chuck Ward of Skyblaster Fireworks, located outside Whitehorse on the Mayo Road, says sales have been good this year and he might run out of some fireworks kits.

He says most of his customers drop a couple of hundred dollars in his shop and some spend up to $600 on 10 to 12 items.

Ward also sells fireworks to communities, like Pelly Crossing. For $3,000, Pelly's show will have "45 minutes of constant bang," he says.

Consumer fireworks are prohibited within Whitehorse city limits, but outside the boundaries, it's anyone's sky.

Eric von Flotow used to buy consumer fireworks in Haines, Alaska, but it's now illegal to bring fireworks across the border without an import permit. He bought his first batch from Skyblaster last year.

"It was a big hit," he said as he perused Ward's offerings Wednesday.

Whitehorse offers free family event

The City of Whitehorse is holding family events at the Canada Games starting at 5 p.m. tonight. The fireworks display is scheduled for 8 p.m., weather-permitting. They will be launched from the Takhini Arena, which will be closed off to the public.

Officials are asking people to take public transit or carpool to the games centre, as there will be limited parking available.
