CBC's Angela Sterritt reports from Yellowknife

A Yellowknife woman was sexually assaulted in her Range Lake area home Sunday.

According to RCMP, a man broke into a house on Rivett Crescent early Sunday morning, and sexually assaulted a woman while she slept. When the woman woke up, the man fled.

Police say there's nothing to indicate this assault is related to other assaults in Yellowknife this summer.

"The circumstances of each incident are different, and there's nothing telling us they are connected," said Cpl. Roxanne Hudym with the Yellowknife RCMP detachment.

This is the fifth publicized report of a sexual assault in Yellowknife this summer. RCMP are investigating, but so far no arrests have been made in any of the cases.

A news release from the RCMP states that "historical crime data" for the city does not indicate "an increased threat to women in Yellowknife." Police say they have met with the mayor, Frame Lake MLA Wendy Bisaro, and the N.W.T. Justice department to discuss safety strategies for the city.
