Sewage spill found under Iqaluit airport terminal
Building to remain open despite 'unpleasant smell'
A sewage spill in the crawl space under the Iqaluit airport terminal building is being investigated by the Workers' Safety and Compensation Commission.
Airport director John Hawkins said staff found the spill Tuesday morning, and that it may have gradually grown over the last week.
"A spill like that in that kind of space, you have to get together a plan and get it all done environmentally correctly and make sure it's clean and disinfected and all that sort of thing," he said.
"It's a very confined space so you have to have a plan as to how you're going to go about it."
Hawkins said if things go as planned it should take about two days for the clean up.
The spill hasn't had any impact on flight operations at the airport.
The spill is "causing an unpleasant smell" but the building will remain open, according to Nunavut's Department of Economic Development and Transportation.
