Salt River family still has a roof over its head
John McKay, 2 kids, 76-year-old grandmother narrowly evade eviction in Fort Smith, N.W.T.
The father of two young children on Salt River First Nation in Fort Smith, N.W.T. says he's relieved they still have a roof over their heads.
Last week Chief Frieda Martselos told John McKay he had until 6 p m on Friday to get out of his house.
Her reasons were complaints from neighbours about fighting and police visits.
But neighbours say ever since McKay's wife went to jail, there haven't been any problems.
And they didn't want to see a family with two young children and an elderly mother forced out.
McKay says the CEO of the band came by on Friday at 5 p.m. and said he was going to change the locks.
McKay told him he wouldn't let him in.
He says the CEO left and didn't return.
The chief and CEO of the Salt River First Nation were not available to comment.
