Returning officers have begun the process of applying for judicial recounts in four very close N.W.T. election races.

The closest finish was in Nunakput, where Herb Nakimayak garnered 229 votes to incumbent Jackie Jacobson's 225.

Under N.W.T. election rules, a recount is ordered in ridings where there is a tie for first place or where the difference between first and second place is less than two per cent of the total votes cast in the riding.

That was the case in Nunakput, as well as in Sahtu, Range Lake and Yellowknife North.

In Sahtu, Danny McNeely won by 12 votes over Yvonne Doolittle. In Range Lake, Caroline Cochrane-Johnson won that riding by only 10 votes over incumbent Daryl Dolynny.

And in Yellowknife North, two former city councillors, Cory Vanthuyne and Dan Wong, finished within 16 votes of each other.

The votes in all four of those ridings will be recounted by a judge in the next 10 days. Only then will the winners in those riding be officially elected.
