Feds, N.W.T. appoint special reps for Akaitcho, Dehcho negotiations

The federal and N.W.T. governments have appointed a ministerial special representative to try and advance treaty and self-government negotiations with the Akaitcho Dene First Nations and the Northwest Territory Mé​tis Nation and land claim negotiations with the Dehcho First Nations.

Thomas Isaac tasked to help resolve outstanding negotiations and overlapping interests

The federal and N.W.T. governments have appointed a ministerial special representative to try and advance treaty and self-government negotiations with the Akaitcho Dene First Nations and the Northwest Territory Mé​tis Nation.

Indigenous and Northern Affairs Minister Carolyn Bennett and N.W.T. Premier Bob McLeod announced Tuesday that Thomas Isaac had been appointed to help resolve the outstanding negotiations and overlapping interests.

In a meeting on Monday with McLeod and the Dehcho First Nations, Bennett also announced the appointment of Anne Marie Doyle as the ministerial special representative to the land claim negotiations with the Dehcho First Nations.

Their tasks? To sit down with each aboriginal group, talk about their views and relay those views to McLeod and Bennett.

The two are expected to report back to the minister and premier in December 2016.
